What is the Comprehensive Trails Plan?
The City Council has challenged City Staff to establish Cedar Rapids as a Bicycle Friendly Community. A Bicycle Friendly Community allows commuters to bicycle to work and other major destinations. This is accomplished by creating a network of roadways and streets that access destinations. The goal is that residents have quick and safe access to this network.
What are the current trail issues?
Trail issues include items such as:
- Uneven & Narrow Bike Lane
- Bikeway Needed (Paved Shoulder Or Sidewalk)
- Repair Pavement
- Off-Road 2-Way Bikeway, Adjacent To Traffic Lane
- Bike On Right Most Lane In One Way Street
- Narrow Paved Shoulders And Poor Sight Lines On High-Speed Traffic
- Narrow One-Side Walkway Bridge
- Unsafe Stream Crossing
- Unsafe Island For 2-3 Idled Bicyclists
- Sharp Bends
- Narrow Sidewalks
- Railroad Crossing
- Sharp Bend In “Blind Spot”

How will walkers and runners use this system?
The typical section for the trail segments will include provisions for pedestrians. In other words as trail segments are improved there will be accommodations for walkers and runners.
How do I give comments and feedback to this plan?
Your comments are very important. There are several opportunities to give your feedback. On this website see the “Contact Us” tab on the Home Page to submit your comments. You may also contact City Staff and Steering Committee members listed under the tabs on the Home Page. Also there will be two Public Input Meetings held: One December 7, 2009 and one February 4, 2010. These meetings will take place at the Crowne Plaza 5 Seasons Hotel, Ballroom #2, 350 1st Avenue N.E. in Cedar Rapids from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.
