American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois Design Award

February 10, 2014

Shive-Hattery is the recipient of an American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Illinois design award. The firm won a Merit Award for its "3D Scanning for Renovation of Von Maur" located in Riverchase Mall at Hoover, Alabama.

ACEC of Illinois recognized Shive-Hattery at its 42nd Annual Engineering Excellence Awards Luncheon on February 7, 2014 at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Normal, Illinois.

Von Maur acquired a store at Riverchase Galleria Mall and the site had several challenges: part of the store resided under an office building and a road and there were three different structural systems (with only one of them documented).

3D scanning was used to determine size and location of the building systems. 3D scanning saved time and provided highly accurate data for Von Maur’s signature store design. Over 6 billion points on the interior and exterior of the building were collected and those points were processed to create one large point cloud of the entire project area.

Having exact scanning measurements increased accuracy of the design documents and reduced time needed for the contractors to determine the routing of various systems on site. 3D Scanning enabled the designers to meet an aggressive time line so the store could open in time for the 2013 holiday season.
