Camanche, IA
Due to potential groundwater quality issues in the western area of Camanche, Shive-Hattery was contracted in 2003 to complete a study of the Camanche Water System, and how the system could support the proposed service area. A model of the Camanche system was completed and evaluated in WaterCAD. Approximately 40 scenarios for pipe size, pipe routes and water pressure supply were initially evaluated. The top three scenarios were chosen for further study, including their effects on water quality, cost of construction and the benefits each solution provided to the city.
As a result of the study, Shive-Hattery designed water system improvements that include extending water service to the rural areas of town, as well as upgrading some of the water mains in town. The project includes the design of two 250,000 gallon pedestal elevated water storage tanks, demolition of a water tower, approximately 1.5 miles of 12-inch water main and 3.5 miles of 8-inch water main, and a new SCADA system. Shive-Hattery is also providing construction services including contract administration, full time construction observation and construction staking. The project is expected to finish this summer on schedule and under budget at $4,300,000.
The existing tower, while in great condition, is not tall enough to accommodate the increased service area. One new tower was located in the center of Camanche, next to City Hall. The second tower was located on the edge of town near proposed development land.
The Camanche tower is host for I-Wireless cellular antennas. The project included communicating with I-Wireless to meet their needs during construction, as well as with the new towers. The new towers were also specified with the necessary holes, brackets and railings for additional cellular companies.
Shive-Hattery stays in close contact with Camanche to make sure their needs are met. During design Shive-Hattery discussed tower options such as tank style, lighting, color, paint system, site layout and other tower options.
