Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center

Previously renting space from the State of Iowa for juveniles in 13 jurisdictions, the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center was ready to build a facility of its own. The goal of the project was to provide a safe environment for youth and staff members, as well as to provide space for future growth.

When the 13-county board took action on building a new facility, juvenile planning and design professionals came together to provide programming, design and construction administration services for the 15,000-square-foot project. These planning and design professionals are now part of Shive-Hattery’s juvenile planning and design group.

The state-of-the-art, $4.4 million facility includes space for administration, juvenile reception and treatment programs. It also provides housing for 30 individuals and a full-sized gym, which is used by community members.

Layout and materials were designed and selected to support the needs of a juvenile environment, including durability and positive interaction between youth and staff.

The Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center provides a secure environment that encourages positive rehabilitation for juveniles. With the facility’s fluid design, multiple programming areas can be run at the same time to keep youth engaged in activities throughout the day.
