Jordan Creek Landscape Architecture
With the addition of Jordan Creek Mall to West Des Moines, much thought was given to the exterior spaces surrounding the development. The overall project would serve as the anchor in a 3,000 acre commercial and residential development. Organizers sought to create an inviting exterior environment that would not only be functional and accessible, but would also be aesthetically pleasing and complement the surrounding community.
A walkable, urban oasis that would be essential to Jordan Creek’s retail identity was developed. Site features include a three-acre lake—central to the whole design—and pedestrian plaza, including a pedestrian bridge, surrounded by nearly 2 million square feet of commercial/retail development, restaurants, motels and an amphitheater. Vehicle traffic is accommodated over 10,000 parking spaces with perimeter circulation roads and four-lane access drives. Nearly a mile of trails connects Jordan Creek Town Center to surrounding neighborhoods and to the City of West Des Moines' trail network.
With over one million visitors to Jordan Creek Town Center each year, the Des Moines metro area experiences a large economic impact from the Center each year. With national retailers and restaurants, JCTC redefined shopping in central Iowa and has become a destination spot for many families. The vibrant outdoor spaces offer visitors a shopping experience that has developed a national reputation. Combining the strongest elements of a traditional mall, lifestyle center and entertainment center with an easily accessible site creates an attraction unmatched anywhere in the state.
