Railroad Avenue Enhancements
The City of West Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department staff sought to study and design aesthetic enhancements to the existing Railroad Avenue streetscape in the historic Valley Junction area. The project focused on creating features that would provide visual interest, promote place recognition and wayfinding and reinforce community identity.
Shive-Hattery developed signage ideas that not only fit the feel of the neighborhood but improved the traffic flow through the area. Important considerations included cost effectiveness, versatility, durability and ease of maintenance for the final design. The features were designed to include printed graphic imagery that explore a historic railroad topic but can be removed and replaced with other images and themes the city may wish to explore in the future.
The final signage features were designed to create a gateway into the community, recall railroad-related structures and to complement existing signage and identity features in the Valley Junction area that also carry the railroad theme.
