Cedar Rapids Water Playgrounds

Challenge

The City of Cedar Rapids wanted to enhance the free recreational opportunities available for city residents. In developing three “keeping cool” water playgrounds, the city also wanted each playground to reflect the distinctive character of its neighborhood.

Solution

A water playground, known as a splashpad, provides an exciting, unique and interactive play adventure for children. And it offers a refreshing environment to all ages. Each water playground had its own unique theme including an amphibians theme at Cedar Valley Park, a rainforest theme at Hayes Park and a fire station theme at Twin Pines Park. The project also included demolition of existing wading pools at Cedar Valley and Twin Pines Parks.

Impact

Three much used new water playground are available to children and their parents to play in the splash pads, keep cool and socialize with neighbors. To minimize the costs and reduce water waste, water service to each splashpad can be activated on demand by users within present operating times.
