UnityPoint Clinic Urgent Care East

Challenge

When a former in-hospital UnityPoint Health Finley Convenient Care clinic was eliminated as part of an ongoing campus expansion and renovation project, UnityPoint Health decided that a new urgent-care clinic was needed in that same area to provide residents with a convenient place for care without having to enter the hospital facility.

The new clinic, UnityPoint Finley Urgent Care East, would be located nearby UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital to serve community members on the east side of Dubuque, Iowa.

It was important that UnityPoint Finley Urgent Care East use interior finishes and color palettes that match the look and feel of Dubuque’s UnityPoint Health Finley Urgent Care West and other UnityPoint Health urgent-care facilities.

Solution

To maintain brand consistency and provide a friendly, welcoming feel, Shive-Hattery worked with finish materials similar to those used at UnityPoint Health Finley Urgent Care West. The vertical height within the building shell was shorter than Urgent Care West, so the existing space had to be smartly designed to take maximum advantage of square footage available, creating as much of an open feel as possible.

Upon entering the clinic, a curved reception desk positioned next to a stone-clad wall greets patients in the waiting area. The waiting room’s back wall features walnut lining that shows off a flat-screen television and juice bar area where visitors can help themselves to healthy beverages while they wait. The flooring and furniture in the waiting room are a mix of neutral browns, tans, and metals, complementing the nature-inspired artwork on the walls.

To control sunlight, decorative window film with UnityPoint Health graphics identify the clinic from the exterior while preventing glare and solar heat gain. Even though the graphics are nearly indistinguishable from the building interior, they improve privacy levels for patients and staff inside.

To reduce staff footsteps, Shive-Hattery created a design that minimizes unnecessary back-and-forth movement for nurses and physicians between the five exam rooms, triage area, and waiting room. Barn-style sliding doors preserve valuable hallway and exam room space, and provide privacy for patients who are waiting on exam tables – even when the sliding door is left open. Medical workstations are positioned within each exam room so that care providers can always face their patients, even when accessing electronic medical records on the computer.

A staff work area located behind the exam rooms offers standing-height work surfaces so caregivers can quickly write notes, update records, or make a phone call.

Impact

UnityPoint Clinic UnityPoint Finley Urgent Care East gives east Dubuque community members a new, convenient option for healthcare without having to enter the hospital. It also fills the healthcare-services void left in the community when UnityPoint Health Finley Convenient Care closed its doors.

Healthcare staff and providers are able to efficiently serve patients through a floorplan and design that reduces the need to walk several steps to complete a task or move from one place to another.
