Clear Creek Amana Community School District Athletic Complex
In 2009, the Clear Creek Amana Community School District in Oxford, Iowa, built a new high school located to the west of its previous high school facility (which became the district’s middle school).
The existing stadium, which had become part of the middle school campus after the new high school was built, was small and outdated, with old bleachers and a timeworn press box. The existing multi-purpose field was also worn out, as was the track.
The Clear Creek Amana Community School District had a decision to make: Build a stadium closer to the new high school or renovate the outdated stadium and continue to use it?
Shive-Hattery completed a cost-analysis comparison to help the Clear Creek Amana Community School District decide whether to rebuild the existing stadium or construct one closer to the new high school. Based on costs and projected facility lifecycle, the decision was made to build an athletic complex adjacent to the new high school.
Because the new complex would be built in a floodplain area, several considerations were made by Shive-Hattery regarding how to design the facility in accordance with regulations set forth by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Plans were developed for a new, oversized soccer field; two natural turf practice fields; a synthetic turf football field; an eight-lane, all-weather track with a sandwich polyurethane surface; bleacher seating for 2,000; a new ticket booth; restrooms; and concessions. The athletic complex also includes state-of-the-art lighting, scoreboards, and sound systems.
As part of this project, plans for a future Clear Creek Amana Community School District baseball/softball complex, with water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and a new electrical feed to the site were also designed.
Building from the excitement of the district’s new high school, the new athletic complex gave students, staff, and parents something else to cheer about. Not only do the Clear Creek Amana high schoolers get to learn in a brand new building, but they now get to compete and root for the Clear Creek Clippers in an all-weather, state-of-the-art athletic complex.
With its close proximity to the high school, the new facility makes sports practice and competition coordination much easier for students, staff, and parents as well.
