Oaknoll Senior Living Courtyard and Rooftop Patio

Challenge

The $55 million Spring Street housing unit expansion at Oaknoll welcomes another 100 residents to the senior living facility. This is also Oaknoll's largest project to date which presented some challenges on a tight urban site tucked into an existing neighborhood. An ample amount of parking was required to accommodate facility needs along with a building connection to the existing main campus across the street. The design team and Owner also wanted to impact the surrounding neighborhood as little as possible.

Solution

Two levels of parking are tucked away beneath four above-ground levels, reducing the visual intrusion of parking on the neighborhood. A portion of the space above the parking lot was also maximized as a modern courtyard offering outdoor seating adjacent to the restaurant, gathering areas, a walking loop, a custom designed fountain and planters lush with trees. Private patios that connect to the public space offer prime views and a green environment three stories above ground. A glass skywalk seamlessly connects the new units to other parts of the facility offering views to nature and seating opportunities all year long.

Impact

Oaknoll Retirement Residence has embraced another model, looking to the future as a positive image. This is reflected not only in their care models but also in the architectural design of their facilities that promote social, contemporary and environmentally sensitive design. The result is a waiting list that never ends as their facility has become a premiere senior living option in the region and they continue to look for opportunities to expand with the same design philosophy.
