University of Iowa Commuter Parking

Challenge

Construction projects at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics resulted in fewer parking spaces near the hospital. To meet the need for staff parking, an existing commuter parking lot in the vicinity was expanded.

Solution

The commuter parking lot was expanded by 339 additional parking spaces. It will now accommodate 747 cars and 60 recreational vehicles during sporting events. The area south of the original parking lot, which was the site of Grant Field, the field for the University's field hockey team was converted to new parking spaces. The project did not impact the existing underground electrical ductbank or water lines that were crossed as a part of the expansion. The entrance off of the Finkbine Commuter Drive was relocated further south with new pavement in the existing south bay of the parking lot to accommodate the new bus route. Included were utility relocations, new parking lot lighting, landscaping, a new access drive and a bus shelter designed to serve and unify the two lots.

Impact

The expanded parking lot provides additional parking options for hospital staff.
