Alliant Energy Training Center

Alliant Energy was in need of a new Technical Training Center for its subsidiary, Interstate Power and Light Company's (IP&L) gas and electric apprentices. The facility is centrally located for training maintenance crew members in Alliant’s service area.

The new Training Center has classrooms, vehicle storage and welding training shop and an outdoor electrical pole training field. The three classrooms are used for lecture style training and computer based training. Three shops—one each for gas, electric and substation—are outfitted with sample electric systems and gas fired equipment to enable apprentices to learn installation and maintenance techniques. An office area for the manager and training staff and a break room and restrooms complete the floor plan of the training facility.

The vehicle and welding building stores vehicles, heavy equipment and materials used for training and includes a welding shop for bench welding and field welding training. The outdoor training field was designed to simulate real life installations. Apprentices practice setting utility poles, climbing those poles, stringing cable, setting and repairing transformers. The gas apprentices dig trenches and set piping filled with compressed air prior to working with actual gas. Apprentices learn to safely maneuver the large rigs used for utility work.

The new facility allows for hands-on training opportunities where apprentices can hone their skills before working out in the field. To increase the efficiency of the facility, control systems for HVAC and lighting were included allowing for the building to be monitored and operated remotely since it is not occupied 100 percent of the time. Because it was a flood-impacted property, in rebuilding the site was also designed to limit disruption and pollution of natural water flows by managing the quality and quantity of stormwater runoff, helping the finished project realize a 30% reduction in water use compared to a conventional water system.
