IDAS Exterior Building Improvements
The Reynolds Building at the Mental Health Institute in Independence, Iowa was constructed in 1873 of Anamosa Limestone. By 2005, the building was suffering from severe deterioration of the existing masonry fabric and needed significant repairs to the damaged limestone.
After providing consulting services for an exterior wall assessment, Shive-Hattery surveyed the building using 3D scanning and then created a model of the building before work began on the project. One hundred percent tuck-pointing of the granite and limestone joints, replacement or repair of damaged and broken limestone restored the building to its 1800s grandeur.
This project matched the latest technology with a historic property to help preserve the structure for many decades to come. The Reynolds Building project was awarded the Special Mention Architectural Design Award by the Masonry Institute of Iowa in 2006.
