Ames, IA
The City of Ames was in need of a new fire station and hired Shive-Hattery to develop a master plan recommendation for the implementation of a new facility on the south side of Ames. The master plan involved:
- Developing preliminary building space program/building size
- Developing three options for the site; reviewing three options with the fire department
- Comparing and contrasting the options
- Refining one option and providing a computer rendering of the recommended options
Upon completion of the master planning phase, the City hired Shive-Hattery to design and develop a new fire station facility based on the conclusions of the master plan. Shive-Hattery designed a 7,200-square-foot fire station to accommodate five resident fire fighters, administration support, general recreational facilities, gear storage and emergency vehicle apparatus bays. New technology was implemented using state of the art communications equipment and under floor radiant heat systems. Projected costs for this project were $1,125,000; however the actual cost of the project came in under budget at $1,065,000. In addition, this project was also completed one month earlier than the schedule projection.
This project received the Grand Award in Masonry Institute of Iowa's 2004 Architectural Design competition.
