Municipal Street Planning Services

Shive-Hattery offers a full range of municipal street planning, design, and construction services for communities of all sizes throughout the Midwest. We are experienced with various types of street paving including concrete, asphalt, colored/patterned concrete, brick, and any combination of these. We not only consider the vehicular traffic through your municipality, but we also consider space requirements for pedestrians to walk, linger, sit or dine. Our municipal street planning and design also includes critical elements such as:

LIGHTING

Creating memorable places, day and night is key to all successful municipal street projects. Good lighting enhances security and increases opportunity to use spaces 24 hours a day. Different types of lighting include flood, pedestrian, accent, street, landscape, and architectural.

WAYFINDING

It´s not just signage anymore! Wayfinding helps establish "where I am," "where I´m going" and "what else is around." We consider wayfinding as a complete package (signs, markers, monuments, signals). We will help guide you how the different elements can work together.

PARKING

Motorists needs must be balanced with pedestrian and bicyclist needs. Coupled with lighting and site amenities, parking can be used to successfully transition between vehicular-only and pedestrian-only areas.

SITE AMENITIES

Streetscape elements are what people think of first when discussing municipal streets. We work closely with our Landscape Architects on many different furnishings and fixtures options:

  • Lights
  • Waste receptacles
  • Ash urns
  • Kiosks
  • Planters
  • Street signs
  • Benches
  • Tables

MAINTENANCE

Local personnel are involved early in the design and development process to ensure their input and buy-in. It is critical to ensure the maintenance budget covers both ongoing and future maintenance (replacement) needs. We work with each municipality to consider the life-cycle costs of design decisions.

FUNDING

Grants and other funding sources are often available for municipal street projects, especially when the projects are tied to other improvements (e.g. building renovation, sewer construction, road widening, streetscapes). Funding options can include:

  • Local option sales tax
  • Special Service Areas (SSA)
  • Capital Improvement Program (CIP)
  • Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts
  • Self-Supported Municipal Improvement Districts (SSMID)
