Eastside Recycling and Education Center

The Eastside Recycling and Education Center, located in Iowa City, Iowa, broke ground on May 25th. The 24,000 square-foot complex will be anchored by an environmental education center and will include a salvage barn, oil drop site, wood chip and compost pick-up station, electronic waste drop site and a Habitat ReStore center. The highlight of the campus is the 2,200-square-foot education center which is aiming for LEED Platinum certification. It will enable public education and awareness of sustainable living and will serve as a statewide case study in sustainable design. The center will have a main classroom, a kitchenette, restrooms, storage and mechanical system spaces. The project was designed by Shive-Hattery and will be built by Knutson Construction. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2011. KCRG Video>> Iowa City Press Citizen article>>

Rock Island Center for Math & Science
The Rock Island Center for Math & Science is the District´s first new elementary school in over three decades. This "magnet" school focuses on math and science and provides space for 550 students (pre-kindergarten through 6th grades) from across the District. Situated on a local and national landmark designation site, the classroom wing of the building is two-stories with a total of four pods containing 6 classrooms plus two additional classrooms, thus making a total of 26 classrooms. The overall square footage is 65,000.
The administrative wing is centrally located and links the classroom wing to the gym/cafeteria/music room/community room wing. To preserve the history of the site, design elements from the original Gothic architecture school were incorporated into the design of the new school. This includes salvaging the original stone arch entrance and installing it in the new building. Sustainable design features were also incorporated into the design including geothermal heat pumps, reflective roofing, occupancy sensors that control lights and HVAC, day lighting and permeable paving.
