New Elementary School - Rock Island School District

School District Looks to the Past for Inspiration

Rock Island School District No. 41 recently approved a long-range building plan that includes the construction of the first new elementary school in more than three decades. The local and national landmark designation site was the former location of a Catholic school and convent, The Villa Chantelle, built in the early 1900s. It closed in the 1970s and was destroyed by fire in 2005. In order to preserve the history of the site, design elements from the original Gothic architecture of the original school will be incorporated into the design of the new building including salvaging the original stone arch entrance and installing it in the new building.

The "magnet" school that will focus on math and science. It will provide for 550 pre-kindergarten through 6th grade students enrolled from across the district. The classroom wing of the building will be two-story with a total of four pods containing six classrooms and two additional classrooms for a total of 26 classrooms. The administrative wing is centrally located and links the classroom wing to the wing housing the gym/cafeteria/music room/community rooms.

Capacity: 550 students
Area: 69,840 SF
Total estimated cost: $9 million
Completion: July 2009
