It is crucial for you to have a resource to candidly discuss you career choices. As an intern, you are partnered with a mid-to-senior-level employee to form a supportive mentor/mentee relationship built on your shared Shive-Hattery experiences. Connecting one-on-one in a relaxed, informal way allows for the development of professional relationships that complement your classroom learning and makes for a richer Shive-Hattery experience.
Interns gain different levels of experience from the office and the field. You will work on real projects our team is currently involved in. As a civil engineering intern you will work on a variety of project types including site design, surface water resources, and transportation. These experiences will help you grow and understand more about the Civil engineering profession, working collaboratively with project teams, and how to serve the needs of clients. From these real-world interactions, you will develop the skills to collaborate with peers and clients while building your professional network.

Beautiful, New Quad Cities Office
Shive-Hattery’s new Quad Cities location is at 56th Street and 18th Avenue in Bettendorf, Iowa. Open in July 2021, the new office showcases what we deliver to our clients through strong collaboration, problem solving and good design. Features include:

- Dedicated virtual reality area
- More meeting and breakout space than our current location
- Outdoor seating area adjacent to break room
You will find one of the several John Deere offices based in the Quad Cities along some other Fortune 500 corporations in our area, including 3M, Exelon, and Arconic. It is not all big business here though. Throughout the area, which encompasses six counties in northwestern Illinois and southeastern Iowa with an overall population of nearly 450,000, there are over 30,000 businesses, locally-owned and beyond. The variety and success creates a robust and continually growing economy.
There are many exciting amenities that thrive here including the Figge Art Museum, Putnam Museum, Quad City Symphony Orchestra, iWireless Center, Bix 7 Road Race, PGA John Deere Classic, Quad Cities Marathon, and Modern Woodmen Ballpark (was recently recognized as the "Best Minor League Ballpark" in America by USA Today readers). The list goes on with many outdoor recreational features, including the Great River Trail for biking, hiking and walking (over 100 miles of trails); numerous local, county, and state parks; boating and fishing opportunities in the Mississippi and Rock Rivers; and access to exceptional golf courses, just to name a few.
