ConnectCR has successfully raised $4.6 million dollars of its initial $7 million dollar fundraising goal for its revitalization project. The vision is to revitalize the urban Cedar Lake and build Smokestack Bridge, a pedestrian/trail bridge, over the Cedar River near the NewBo and Czech Village neighborhoods in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Shive-Hattery is proud to have a role in this initiative as the design firm to develop the Smokestack Bridge concepts. The design was developed through a series of design charettes tying back to the rich history in this area of Cedar Rapids.

The project will add a great amenity and destination along the Cedar Valley Nature Trail.

Starting life as a slant tower suspension bridge named the Sleeping Giant, it was refined into a bridge that borrows design detailing from Cedar Rapid’s industrial heritage. Emphasizing the proposed span’s relationship to the former site of one of City’s early major employers, T.M. Sinclair & Co., the concept idealizes a local vernacular based design championed in a collaborative effort between Shive-Hattery, HNTB and the local community.
