We asked Luke about his journey, what’s kept him here, and what makes Shive-Hattery stand out.
Tell us about your role and your journey to Shive-Hattery.
“I am a full time Civil Design Professional in the Eastern Iowa Civil Group. My team and I complete site design for commercial projects all over the nation. My journey to Shive-Hattery started my junior year of college. My old roommate had an internship here in a different field, and he had nothing but great things to say about the company. I decided to apply for the open Civil Intern position in the Madison office. From there, I accepted the internship, worked through my last year of school part time, and was able to accept a full-time position when I graduated.”
What originally attracted you to the firm, and what has kept you here?
“When I started my internship, I was extremely impressed with how well everyone worked together. Whether that be engineers and designers of the same discipline, or cross discipline coordination. Everyone got along well, and everyone seemed to enjoy the work they were doing. The employees at Shive-Hattery understood what it meant to do quality work. I was attracted to Shive-Hattery because quality work of meaningful projects was not an afterthought, and that is what has kept me here.”

How would you describe the culture at Shive-Hattery to someone considering joining the firm?
“The culture is truly unbeatable. Everyone at the firm wants you to succeed and will push you to be the best version of yourself you can be. Everyone makes themselves available to you, and everyone wants to see you succeed. Beyond work, Shive-Hattery understands the importance of social events, workplace camaraderie, and office relations. Each day is something new, and Shive-Hattery is the best place to actively learn, engage with coworkers, and have a great work-life balance.”
Can you share a moment where you felt especially supported, mentored, or encouraged here?
“Shive-Hattery is actively encouraging its employees to get out into the community. When I wanted to join an external organization to further expand my network, Shive-Hattery was not only accepting of this, but also actively encouraging me to branch out my network and develop my interpersonal skills.”
What would you say to someone considering building their career at Shive-Hattery?
“Beginning your career Shive-Hattery can be a catalyst for personal and company-wide growth. There are ample opportunities to expand your technical and business development skills. No matter who you are, Shive-Hattery gives you the opportunity to mold your career to your interests and goals.”

What stood out to you during your internship experience?
“There is no work that is too challenging. Even if there is a certain technical aspect of a project that you may not be too knowledgeable on, there is always someone within the company that can assist or teach you. Everyone is more than happy to give their time to make sure you know how to successfully complete projects, develop quality plans, and market yourself internally and externally.”
When did you realize you could see yourself building a career here?
“About a month into my internship, I knew Shive-Hattery was a place I wanted to be. The work I was doing was impactful and it really drove my interests. But more importantly, the people I worked with consistently had positive attitudes and were always willing to help.”
How did the team support your transition from student to professional?
“The team set high expectations for me and quickly learned that is exactly what I needed. They were willing to have an evolving work plan in place for me. They also were ready with a wide variety of projects, so I could dabble in many different areas of Civil Engineering. From my internship, they knew what I was good at and what I needed practice in. The team was well prepared for me, and they had lofty goals and aspirations for me. I truly love working with everyone on my team, and I know that they want the best for me.”
