Shive-Hattery’s Tacoma design studio is located in the heart of downtown Tacoma, placing our team at the center of one of the Pacific Northwest’s most creative and fast-evolving cities.

Our roots here run deep. The studio traces its history to Helix Design Group, established in 1994, which grew over three decades into a respected firm known for thoughtful, client-focused design. From mountain views to waterfront dining to a thriving arts and cultural scene, Tacoma is a genuinely inspiring place to work and live. Whether you’re watching the sun rise over Commencement Bay or exploring the city’s iconic architecture, there’s always something here that reminds you why design matters.

Top 5 Reasons We Love Our Tacoma Studio

  • Our design history is part of this city’s story. The Tacoma Dome is the largest wooden-domed arena in the world by volume, and our team was commissioned to design its first major renovation since its original construction.
  • Art and creativity are part of everyday life here. The 500-foot Bridge of Glass, described by Dale Chihuly as “the gateway that welcomes people to Tacoma,” and the nearby Museum of Glass make this city a destination for anyone who loves design.
  • Downtown puts everything within reach. The restored 1916 Elks Temple, now McMenamins Elks Temple, is just one example of the vibrant entertainment, history and gathering spots that make downtown Tacoma an exciting place to work.
  • The food and drink scene is worth savoring. The Lobster Shop on Ruston Way offers fresh seafood alongside outstanding views of Mount Rainier and the Olympic Mountain Range, and that’s just the beginning of what Tacoma’s dining scene has to offer.
  • Nature and adventure are always close by. Point Defiance Park spans 760 acres of old-growth forest within the city, surrounded on two sides by the saltwater Puget Sound.
