Blending Healthcare and Hospitality

Medical Campuses Go Beyond Healthcare to Be a Destination

Genesis Health System plans to build a new hospital in Bettendorf, Iowa, to anchor a new 51-acre destination medical campus.

Destination medical campuses are emerging as transformative spaces that blend healthcare, hospitality, and commercial innovation. These campuses prioritize treatment and the holistic human experience, catering to patients, families, and staff.

The future MercyOne Genesis Health System campus in Bettendorf, Iowa, will be a destination for more than healthcare. The 51-acre site will feature a hospital, specialty clinic, medical office building, parking garage, and commercial retail and restaurant spaces. This new medical campus will be adjacent to a growing commercial district with the TBK Bank Sports Complex, Iron Tee Golf, hotels, restaurants, an outpatient surgery center, and a medical office building.

“The addition of the Genesis Medical Center complex and the assorted other commercial uses will be a welcomed addition to the area,” said Bettendorf Mayor Bob Gallagher. “Increasing the critical mass of daily employees in North Bettendorf will only help the restaurants and shops thriving at The Plex and those coming on board soon,” Gallagher said in a recent Quad Cities Business Journal article.

Medical Campus Communities

Destination medical campuses are more than centers of healthcare—they function as vibrant, multifaceted communities that prioritize wellness, education, and community engagement. Beyond cutting-edge medical facilities, these campuses incorporate holistic features and programs that connect patients, visitors, and residents to a broader sense of well-being and community.

Community outreach programs and education centers play a vital role, offering health seminars, preventative care workshops, and public wellness events that make healthcare accessible and proactive. These initiatives foster community integration and align with a growing societal emphasis on preventative and holistic care.

Amenities like healing gardens and thoughtfully designed public spaces provide opportunities for reflection and relaxation, creating a sense of calm for patients and their families. On-site restaurants, accessible transportation, and retail spaces further enhance convenience, ensuring that the campus is a welcoming destination for medical and non-medical visits.

Holistic experiences extend to emotional and spiritual well-being through counseling programs, chaplaincy services, and creative outlets like art therapy or music. These features cultivate an environment supporting physical and mental healing while building trust and familiarity.

Inspired by hospitality and workplace design principles, destination medical campuses are forward-thinking and adaptable, creating spaces where people feel cared for, connected, and engaged—whether seeking medical care, education, or simply enjoying a walk through the gardens.

The Hospitality of Healing

Destination medical campuses take cues from the hospitality industry, creating spaces that allow patients and visitors to feel “transported” to a less stressful and more inviting reality. Thoughtful amenities cater to diverse needs, ensuring everyone—patients, families, and staff—finds the campus a welcoming space.

The journey to and through a destination medical campus should feel seamless. Every step of the arrival process, from parking to check-in, should reduce stress and set the tone for a positive experience. Clear signage, intuitive wayfinding, and welcoming concierge services help visitors navigate with ease and confidence.

While these elements are often labeled as “extras” during budget discussions, they are essential in shaping a cohesive and inviting environment. So, here’s our friendly nudge to prioritize patient and visitor experience—let’s get creative with Value Engineering elsewhere!

Families can enjoy breakaway spaces, such as phone booths for privacy or small nooks for respite, giving family members options to decompress. Playgrounds, coffee shops, and diverse dining areas (offering more than traditional hospital fare) ensure visitors can relax or focus while waiting. These elements transform the often-overwhelming experience of accompanying a loved one into one that feels manageable and even rejuvenating.

Investing in amenities for healthcare workers is just as crucial as designing patient-centered spaces. Providing comfortable and adaptable areas for rest, meals, and social connection can significantly boost morale and retention. Thoughtfully designed staff spaces show appreciation for caregivers whose well-being directly impacts the quality of care they provide. In today’s competitive market, attracting and retaining top talent isn’t just about salaries—it’s about creating environments where they feel valued and supported to do their best work for the community.

Conclusion

Destination medical campuses are revolutionizing healthcare by integrating hospitality, commercial innovation, and human-centered design into every aspect of the experience. These campuses are not just treatment facilities—they are holistic environments that prioritize healing, connection, and community at their core.

As the future of healthcare continues to evolve, these campuses set the benchmark for what is possible. By thoughtfully balancing functionality with a welcoming atmosphere, they offer a blueprint for redefining how care is delivered and received. The days of sterile, intimidating spaces are behind us—destination medical campuses are shaping a future where healthcare is synonymous with comfort, dignity, and humanity.

For patients, visitors, and staff alike, a well-designed medical campus doesn’t just meet needs; it exceeds expectations, proving that our environments can transform lives and set new standards in healthcare excellence.
