Camanche 9th St. Reconstruction Design
Located in Camanche, IA
The City of Camanche needed to reconstruct Ninth Street, one of only four access roads to Highway 67, to improve safety and address flooding issues. The narrow, rural road had deteriorating pavement and a ditch that funneled water toward nearby homes and a trailer park, creating persistent drainage problems. The project also required careful planning because Ninth Street served as the only outlet for a neighborhood and connected to several residential driveways. Maintaining access for residents throughout construction was a critical challenge.
Shive-Hattery partnered with the City to transform Ninth Street into a modern, urban complete street. The design widened lanes for driver comfort, added curbs and gutters, and introduced a new sidewalk to improve pedestrian safety. A storm sewer replaced the open ditch, utilities were relocated, and additional stormwater intakes were installed to direct water away from homes. Construction was phased block by block, with proactive communication to residents through social media and direct outreach to minimize disruptions.
The completed project improves safety, accessibility, and stormwater management for the community. Residents now have a safer route to Highway 67 and a sidewalk that connects them to town and the nearby high school. By addressing flooding concerns and modernizing infrastructure, the City is better prepared for future development south of Ninth Street. This project reflects Camanche’s commitment to improving quality of life and Shive-Hattery’s dedication to delivering thoughtful, community-focused solutions.
