City of Waukee – Warrior Lane Improvements

The City of Waukee is one of the fastest growing communities in Iowa. Over the last several years, it has undertaken a number of improvement projects to provide for future development. The Warrior Lane corridor is an existing corridor that was once a rural two lane roadway that has become a heavily traveled city street.

This project included a roundabout to replace an existing 5-way stop intersection that had become dangerous. Traffic would back up more than 1,500 feet on three of the five legs, particularly during school start and dismissal times for the nearby middle school and high school. Significant aesthetic enhancements, provisions for bikes and pedestrians and a joint utility trench adjacent to the corridor to relocate underground communication facilities were also included.

Along the route, stakeholders included homeowners, a church, Waukee Schools, Waukee Public Library and City Parks and Rec Staff with a large City park along the route. The project was completed in phases with the construction of site improvements at the public library beginning prior to the first phase of roadway improvements bid in December 2020.

After opening in the fall of 2021, the roundabout has been a terrific success, virtually eliminating all traffic backups. The public has grown to appreciate the roundabout and the traffic benefits it has provided.
