Marion Public Services Maintenance Facility
Located in City of Marion, IA
The City of Marion’s previous public services facility was inadequate and structurally deficient, limiting the department’s ability to efficiently manage essential services like street repair, snow removal, and waste management. City officials recognized the need for a modern facility to support the growing community and improve operational efficiency.
To address these needs, Shive-Hattery partnered with Marion Public Services to design a 140,000-square-foot Public Services Building. The new facility integrates administrative offices, public entry and meeting spaces, staff locker rooms, and a break room that meets ICC 500 Storm Shelter standards. This ensures that the building not only supports daily operations but also provides a safe haven during severe weather events.
Adjacent to the administrative areas, the vehicle storage and maintenance space offers significant enhancements over the previous facility. It includes a large wash bay, vehicle service area, fabrication shop, and ample storage. The space accommodates 61 parking bays, six equipment wash bays, eight vehicle service bays, five vehicle lifts, and dedicated fabrication facilities, enabling the department to maintain and repair its fleet more efficiently. The building’s structure, composed of precast concrete wall panels and a pre-engineered metal building frame with a hardened steel roof deck, ensures durability and resilience against harsh weather conditions. Additionally, the facility’s geothermal system contributes to long-term energy savings and sustainability, reflecting the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
The new building replaces the former facility located a few miles away, which will continue to serve as a recycling and yard waste drop-off site for the foreseeable future. This strategic relocation allows for the consolidation of essential services and improves access to critical maintenance resources, ultimately enhancing the department’s ability to serve the community.
The new Marion Public Services Building will serve as a critical hub for the city’s operations, providing a safe, efficient, and sustainable workspace for over 40 Public Works employees. By investing in a facility that not only meets modern standards but also allows for future growth, the City of Marion is setting a new benchmark for community resilience and operational excellence. This state-of-the-art building will enable the public works department to manage the city’s infrastructure needs more effectively, from snow and ice control to stormwater management, ensuring that Marion continues to thrive for years to come.
