WDMCS Media Center Addition
Located in West Des Moines, IA
Looking for a holistic approach to facility improvements, West Des Moines Community Schools engaged Shive-Hattery to evaluate their buildings and develop a prioritized master plan. Western Hills Elementary was identified as one of three facilities with the greatest need. As programming expanded, available space became increasingly limited, with vestibules repurposed for instrumental music lessons and instrument storage, creating safety and fire hazards. As a post-World War II building with multiple additions over time, the school also experienced elevation changes of more than five feet in some areas and included an underutilized courtyard overgrown with invasive plant material.
Through the discovery process, it became clear that additional square footage was necessary. The design team developed three options: constructing a south addition and infilling the courtyard, partially expanding the media center while enclosing part of the courtyard, or fully enclosing and infilling the courtyard. The third option was ultimately selected, requiring close collaboration across the design team to address structural challenges. Because the existing building was not designed to support the added load, new columns were strategically placed over openings to carry the structure. Clerestory windows were incorporated to bring in natural daylight without distraction, and stormwater systems were updated with resized roof drains and new piping beneath the floor. By converting four exterior walls to interior conditions, the design also reduced thermal loss.
The transformed space now serves as the school’s central hub, housing a new media center and a dedicated instrument storage room. Designed for flexibility, the media center supports diverse programming and project-based learning, with finishes that provide a neutral backdrop for student work and built-in presentation space for assemblies and performances. The former media center was converted into a music suite with sound-absorbing materials and durable finishes to improve acoustics and maintenance. Additional improvements, including a new conference room and a ramp to address grade changes, enhanced accessibility and functionality. Completed in summer 2020, the project successfully turned an underutilized courtyard into a vibrant and essential part of the school.
