Federal Way’s Operation and Maintenance Facility
Located in Federal Way, WA
As the City of Federal Way continues to grow, its operations and maintenance needs are expected to grow with it. The City anticipates adding 20 to 30 staff positions over the next 20 years to meet increasing community needs. The previous operations were spread across multiple locations, creating challenges for coordination and long-term growth. City needed a plan for a new facility that could consolidate services while providing flexibility for future staffing and operational demands.
HDG/Shive-Hattery supported the City through a two-phase planning process for a new operations and maintenance facility. Phase one included a preliminary needs assessment to better understand current operations, future staffing requirements and space needs. The team is also developing a site layout and evaluating potential locations to identify a recommended site for the future facility. This planning process gave the City a clear foundation for making informed decisions as the project moved forward.
The second phase brought operations and maintenance services together in one centralized location, improving coordination and efficiency for City staff. Planning for anticipated staffing growth now will help ensure the facility can continue serving the City as community needs evolve. Consolidating services also provides an opportunity to streamline daily operations and make better use of City resources. The long-term plan positions Federal Way to support reliable municipal services well into the future.
