Des Moines Public Schools Reimagining Education

Facing declining enrollment, aging facilities, and evolving educational needs, Des Moines Public Schools launched its Reimagine Education plan to update, repurpose, and modernize its schools. As part of this 10-year initiative, the district identified King Elementary School for revitalization.  

King Elementary School serves a richly diverse student body, including many immigrants, refugees, and underrepresented groups. The district’s vision for the school is to celebrate this diversity, promote inclusivity, and create a safe and inspiring environment for learning and community engagement. 

The architectural and design team at Shive-Hattery drew inspiration from the district leaders’ passion, aiming to create a school where every child feels safe, recognized, and valued. From these conversations, the concept of a kaleidoscope emerged, a powerful symbol of beauty in diversity. 

The design includes architectural elements inspired by a kaleidoscope, portal-like windows, fractal patterns on the façade, and a sculptural installation in the lobby. Maximizing natural light enhances wellness and creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. The plan also includes a makerspace, expanded media center, collaboration spaces, and redesigned art, music, and kindergarten areas, all aimed at promoting collaborative and adaptable learning. A dedicated entrance for the community center, along with spaces that can function independently yet connect to school activities, reinforces the idea of shared ownership.  

This conceptual design will help visualize potential improvements and generate excitement during bond referendum presentations. High-quality renderings and clear storytelling will equip the district with tools to engage and inspire the community. Ultimately, the King Elementary concept exemplifies how thoughtful and culturally responsive design can foster school communities where every student feels they belong.
