The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum—one of only thirteen presidential libraries in the United States—faced a critical moment in its legacy. More than 30 years after its last major renovation, the facility no longer met the expectations of modern audiences or fully conveyed the depth of Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover’s story. Aging infrastructure, outdated exhibits, and a constrained entry sequence limited both accessibility and engagement. At the same time, stakeholders sought to transform the museum into a more dynamic, nationally relevant destination—one that could inspire new generations while honoring the building’s historic character and its significance within the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. Delivering this vision required balancing preservation with reinvention, coordinating multiple partners, and executing a complex renovation within an active federal and philanthropic framework.

Shive‑Hattery served as the architect and engineer of record, leading the architectural and engineering transformation in collaboration with BRC Imagination Arts, the project’s experience designer. The team re-envisioned the facility from the inside out, implementing a comprehensive renovation paired with a thoughtful expansion. A new front façade and reconfigured entry create a more welcoming and legible arrival experience, while a strategically designed addition expands the lobby and gift shop to better accommodate visitors. Inside, the museum was fully restructured, with all gallery spaces rebuilt to support immersive, technology-driven exhibits that bring the Hoover story to life. Systems and infrastructure were modernized to improve performance, accessibility, and long-term resilience. Throughout the project, the design team carefully integrated new interventions with the building’s original limestone architecture, maintaining continuity with the historic campus while positioning the facility for the future.

The result is a transformed national destination that redefines how visitors experience the legacy of America’s 31st president. The renovated museum offers engaging, interactive storytelling that connects with diverse audiences and encourages deeper understanding of Hoover’s humanitarian contributions, leadership, and global impact. Expanded and more intuitive public spaces enhance accessibility and visitor flow, while the updated building systems ensure operational efficiency for decades to come. Beyond the building itself, the project strengthens West Branch’s role as a cultural and tourism hub, generating renewed interest and economic activity in the region. By blending preservation with innovation, Shive‑Hattery helped deliver a modern museum experience rooted in timeless values—ensuring the Hoover story remains relevant, accessible, and inspiring for generations to come.
