Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute

Located in Crown Point, IN

Back to projects

The physician-owned Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute (LBJI) strategized expansion of its orthopedic and physical therapy services in a highly competitive Crown Point, IN market. The owners envisioned a space that was modern-looking and less clinical in appearance.

A site for a new building for the orthopedic practice was selected in the fast-growing area of the Beacon Hill development in Crown Point. The building was designed facing busy arterial street 109th Avenue to increase the practice’s visibility.

The LBJI vestibule contains two entrances, one for the main practice and one for an Orthopedic Urgent Care, which handles after-hours emergencies as an alternative to a hospital ER. Five separate bays for each of the different physicians encompass 27 exam rooms, each one set up specifically for each physician’s area of specialty. Nurses’ stations are located in between the bays. An imaging suite contains two X-ray rooms and an MRI Scan room. The new space also allowed the physicians to add a 3,600-square-foot physical therapy suite, a new service that helps them fully care for patients’ injuries. A second floor is dedicated to administrative functions, with a board room that looks out over the first floor.

To add more warmth to the space, the waiting area has clusters of lounge furniture much like a hotel. Soothing light blue colors and artwork were added to the waiting and exam rooms. Dark charcoal tile is complemented by light wood accents in the ceilings and blue-toned accents on the walls. Unique accent colors were used on the walls in each corner of the bays to help patients with wayfinding.

The new two-story, 45,000-square-foot building takes full advantage of traffic on 109th Avenue, giving the orthopedic practice the increased visibility it was looking for. By adding an after-hours Urgent Care and physical therapy services, the practice is able to bill itself as a one-stop shop for orthopedic needs, giving it an advantage in a competitive market. With extra space left framed and ready for design, LBJI has the ability to easily add more physician bays or physical therapy areas as the practice needs grow.
