Moline Library Gardens
Located in Moline, IL
The Moline Public Library sought to transform an adjacent one-acre lot into a vibrant outdoor space that would extend its mission to inspire lifelong learning, create community, and connect people with nature. The library envisioned a flexible, inclusive environment that could support programming, events, and everyday use by people of all ages and abilities. With limited experience in outdoor placemaking, the library needed a partner to help shape a vision, build consensus, and guide them through design, fundraising, and implementation.
Shive-Hattery collaborated with library staff, board members, and community stakeholders to co-create a space that reflects the library’s values and serves the community in new ways. Through early workshops and design charrettes, the team gathered input that directly informed the layout and features of the garden. The final design balances active and passive uses, offering a flexible green space for performances and gatherings, as well as quiet areas for reading and reflection.
Sustainability and accessibility were central to the design. The garden incorporates pollinator habitats, stormwater infiltration features, and repurposed on-site materials like tree logs for natural play and edging. Universal design principles ensure the space is welcoming and usable for all. A central sculpture—aligned with the library’s main axis—anchors the space visually and symbolically, reinforcing the connection between indoor and outdoor experiences.
To support fundraising and community engagement, Shive-Hattery provided layered visual storytelling, including hand sketches, 3D renderings, and final photography. These tools helped the library communicate its vision, secure donor support, and build excitement throughout the process.
The Moline Library Garden has become a beloved community asset. Children explore natural play features, families attend outdoor concerts, and readers find quiet corners to enjoy a book. The space supports the library’s programming and mission, offering a place of connection—to others, to nature, and to learning. The project also demonstrates how thoughtful design, community collaboration, and visual storytelling can turn a shared vision into a lasting resource.
