Back to projects

The City of South Bend wanted to revitalize Seitz Park, a beloved public space along the St. Joseph River, while accommodating the University of Notre Dame’s new hydroelectric plant. The challenge was integrating infrastructure improvements with a park renovation that honored the site’s history and enhanced its role as a community destination. The project needed to balance sustainability goals with amenities that would attract visitors and support events. Collaboration between the City and Notre Dame was key to ensuring the park remained a vibrant part of South Bend’s riverfront.

Shive-Hattery worked with the City to design a park that blends functionality, beauty, and environmental stewardship. The renovation introduced new restrooms, a concession area, and a raised riverwalk that offers scenic views of the water. Seating areas and a revitalized bandshell create spaces for relaxation and community gatherings, while improved access connects visitors to trails and the riverfront. The bandshell also celebrates South Bend’s deep-rooted arts community, providing a venue for performances that enrich the cultural fabric of the city. The design reflects South Bend’s commitment to sustainability and its vision for a strong parks and trails system.

Reopened in July 2025, Seitz Park is now a destination where residents and visitors can enjoy nature, recreation, and cultural events. The improvements enhance quality of life and support the City’s efforts to create a more connected and resilient community. By partnering with Notre Dame and investing in thoughtful design, South Bend transformed a historic park into a modern amenity. This project demonstrates how collaboration and creativity can shape spaces that inspire and bring people together.
