Back to projects

Two obsolete and undersized reserve centers were combined into a single, centralized, modern and sustainable building. The Reserve Center serves 100 soldiers from the Iowa Nation Guard and the US Army Reserves. Shive-Hattery worked with Hanson Professional Services and Old Veteran Construction under a design-build contract with the federal government to deliver a new facility on time and within budget.

The center has a diverse program that includes administrative, assembly, training and vehicle maintenance. Unit specific spaces are located around the core of the building which is made up of shared, flexible spaces. The center has spaces for drill hall, maintenance bay, kitchen, classroom, administrative spaces, storage spaces, lockers, fitness room and latrines. Securing the building and site was an essential requirement that was meet without compromising principal design elements using extensive natural lighting, open public spaces, clear way-finding and sustainable practices.

The facility is designed to provide for today's modern reserve forces while remaining adaptable to future demands. Energy modeling and commissioning were used to validate the energy performance of the center and contributed to its LEED Silver certification. The Reserves have a responsive, high performance and secure center that will remain relevant for the next 50 years.
