Back to projects

The Eastern Iowa Chapter of the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program offers high school students the opportunity to work with industry professionals to learn basic design, engineering, and construction management skills.

Typically the projects are fictitious, but this year the more than 150 students enrolled from a seven-county area are working with mentors to design and engineer a very real project that they will also have an opportunity to help build. The project is a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Center for the Clear Creek Amana Middle School in Tiffin. The 1,500-square-foot facility will serve as the center for this advanced program's activities and is also planned to accommodate other community groups and activities. Shive-Hattery will develop construction documents from the students' design to facilitate construction in the spring and summer of 2015. Mentors from the construction industry throughout the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City corridor will oversee construction.

This ACE program provides an opportunity for both design and construction professionals to reach out to the next generation to showcase career opportunities in the industry. The 2014-2015 academic year was the inaugural year for the Eastern Iowa Chapter. Both students and mentors look forward to the continuation of the program for years to come.
