Decatur County Hospital Masterplan

Located in Leon, IA

Back to projects

A decade after construction of a new building, Decatur County Hospital had enough volume that a second operating room (OR) was needed. At the same time, a family medicine clinic in town was closing, and the administration saw the need to expand their capacity for primary care. It was decided to build an addition to the one-story hospital building.

The addition is connected to the existing hospital but was kept closed off during construction to allow care to continue and keep the hospital sterile. The owners chose a more modern design for the addition while also maintaining the look of the existing building. The exterior is brick and block like the original hospital, but the vestibule is taller and incorporates metal panels and curved glass that illuminate the waiting room with lots of natural light. Local artwork pairs well with the simple but modern architecture.

Inside, low-maintenance finishes were used in the clinic and OR to help maintain cleanliness. The new addition, which opened in 2022, adds around 8,000 square feet of space to the hospital.
