Shive-Hattery provided architecture, interior design, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering services for the renovation of Cath Lab 5 at MercyOne Genesis Health System’s East Campus in Davenport, Iowa. The project converted an aging cardiovascular procedure suite into a modern EP Lab environment designed to support advanced clinical technology, optimize staff workflow, and enhance operational efficiency.

The renovation presented significant technical challenges. The project was located within an existing facility constructed through multiple building expansions over several decades, requiring extensive investigation and coordination among disciplines. Limited above-ceiling space created a highly constrained environment for routing new mechanical, electrical, technology, and medical gas systems while accommodating the infrastructure demands of modern imaging and procedural equipment.

Shive-Hattery’s multidisciplinary team worked closely with clinical users and equipment vendors to coordinate ceiling-mounted procedure lights, imaging equipment, and integrated boom systems. Detailed structural analysis and coordination ensured the building could safely support new equipment loads while integrating with existing structural systems originating from different construction eras.

Through careful planning and rigorous coordination, the design team developed solutions that brought the procedure room and supporting spaces into alignment with contemporary healthcare standards without significantly expanding the existing footprint. The resulting design eliminated floor-mounted cords and equipment where possible, improved staff circulation, reduced operational constraints, and created a cleaner, more efficient care environment.

The completed renovation provides MercyOne Genesis with a highly functional and technologically advanced EP lab that will support cardiovascular care for years to come while maximizing the value of its existing facility investment.
