Franklin General Hospital Addition + Renovation
Located in Hampton, IA
Franklin General Hospital’s 2021 Master Plan identified that both the Emergency and Physical Therapy departments had outgrown their existing spaces, limiting their ability to serve the community efficiently. In addition, the Cardiac Rehab and Sleep Study departments needed relocation, and the hospital’s mechanical and electrical systems required upgrades. A critical challenge was ensuring all departments remained operational throughout the construction process.
To address these issues, Shive-Hattery’s design team created a 4,300-square-foot addition and renovated 7,000 square feet of existing space. This included expanding the Emergency Department with two new Trauma Rooms, three Exam Rooms (one designed for mental health patients), and enhancing operational flexibility by allowing for shared staffing. Physical Therapy expanded into the adjacent Cardiac Rehab space, which was relocated near the Emergency Department. The Sleep Study department moved to a new 1,300-square-foot addition. The design team implemented a four-phase construction plan, including temporary spaces, HVAC systems, and public entrances, ensuring uninterrupted services during construction.
The expansion and renovation of Franklin General Hospital enhanced patient care capacity and improved operational efficiency across multiple departments. By ensuring services continued throughout construction, the hospital minimized disruptions to patient care. The modernized spaces, improved workflows, and updated systems not only addressed current demands but also positioned the hospital to better serve its growing community for years to come.
