Iowa City CSD West High School Plumbing Upgrades Phase 3

Iowa City Community School District needed to modernize aging plumbing infrastructure at West High School while maintaining a functional environment for students and staff. Existing galvanized piping, water-heating equipment, and plumbing fixtures required replacement as part of a larger, multi-year improvement effort. Upgrades also needed to coordinate with ADA improvements and renovations throughout restrooms, classrooms, food service spaces, and locker rooms. Completing the work in multiple phases allowed the District to address critical needs while minimizing disruption to school operations.

Shive-Hattery designed each phase of the plumbing upgrades, providing a consistent approach throughout the multi-year project. Improvements included replacing galvanized piping with copper, upgrading water heaters and recirculation pumps, and replacing plumbing fixtures. The work was carefully coordinated with ADA upgrades and renovations occurring throughout the school. This phased approach provided the District with a practical path for systematically modernizing West High School’s plumbing systems.

The improvements provide West High School with more reliable, efficient, and updated plumbing infrastructure. Replacing aging systems helps reduce maintenance concerns while supporting the long-term operation of the facility. Updated fixtures and coordinated ADA improvements also create more functional and accessible spaces for students, staff, and visitors. With the final phase completing the broader effort, the District benefits from a comprehensive plumbing system designed to serve the school well into the future.
