For years the emergency medical system (EMS) and volunteer fire department struggled with space that was crowded and too small to fit its equipment. Custom trucks had to be built and others modified so they would fit through the existing doors. The trustees of the LeRoy Community Fire Protection District sought to replace the cramped and outdated facility with a new modern facility that would meet current needs and provide adequate space for the growing community.
The new facility sits on the corner of the two major access points to the village. The site was repurposed from the former IGA grocery store which demolished as a part of the project. The facility is 14,200 sf and houses the full time EMS unit, which includes two bays for apparatus, office space and sleeping quarters for six paramedics. The fire department is volunteer and has six apparatus bays, office space for the chief, training room, lounge, kitchen and communications room. Being a critical first responder facility, the decision was made to build the apparatus bays with precast concrete to provide a higher level of protection from severe weather. The support areas are constructed of wood framing.
The new facility was a collaborative effort between our design team, Catalyst Construction Manager and the Trustees to establish a project budget, gather public support and maintain the schedule and budget throughout. This resulted in a new home for the EMS and fire department that will benefit the community for years to come.
