Simpson College-Smith Chapel Roof
Located in Indianola, IA
Smith Chapel holds a distinct place on Simpson College’s campus as both a visual landmark and a meaningful gathering space. Although its asphalt shingle roof was not as old as other campus structures, it had reached the end of its useful life and required replacement. As with other improvements across campus, the college sought a solution that would strengthen performance while maintaining the chapel’s role within the broader architectural fabric. Any change needed to feel timeless and aligned with the campus as a whole.
Drawing on a consistent design approach, Shive‑Hattery designed a new roof system using the same long‑life material selected for Kresge Hall. This strategy ensured visual consistency across campus while providing a roof capable of withstanding Iowa’s climate for decades. The replacement was carefully detailed to preserve the chapel’s proportions and architectural character, reinforcing its connection to surrounding buildings and the campus environment.
With the new roof in place, Smith Chapel benefits from improved durability, reduced maintenance needs, and dependable protection without drawing attention to the work itself. The building continues to feel familiar and grounded, supporting its role as an enduring part of campus life. By investing in a thoughtful, long‑term solution, Simpson College strengthened one of its most meaningful spaces while preserving the qualities that make the campus feel special and iconic.
