Back to projects

Kresge Hall is one of the most recognizable buildings on Simpson College’s campus, a post‑World War II residence hall whose slate roof had quietly served the college for more than 80 years. While the roof’s performance had significantly declined, its appearance remained an essential part of the campus identity. Simpson College needed a solution that addressed aging materials, deteriorating conditions, and the presence of asbestos insulation beneath the original roof assembly, all while preserving the visual continuity that makes the campus feel cohesive and iconic.

Shive‑Hattery partnered with the college to develop a roofing solution that balanced safety, longevity, and respect for place. Following careful asbestos abatement, the design team created a new roof assembly that restored the roof’s integrity and filled the gaps left behind without altering the building’s outward character. Material selection focused on finding a replacement that closely matched the scale, texture, and color of the original slate while delivering a service life of 50 years or more. Special attention was given to detailing at edges and transitions so the new roof would read as a natural extension of the building rather than a visible intervention.

The completed roof provides Kresge Hall with modern durability and reliable protection while maintaining the familiar appearance that students, alumni, and visitors expect. By selecting long‑lasting materials that reduce maintenance demands, Simpson College can redirect future resources toward other campus priorities. Most importantly, Kresge Hall remains a defining presence on campus, looking much as it always has. For those walking by, the project is nearly imperceptible, a result that reflects a thoughtful approach rooted in preservation, performance, and long‑term value.
