When you are planning a project for an existing building, hazardous materials such as asbestos are potentially hidden problems. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that an asbestos survey be performed for every renovation and demolition project by a licensed asbestos inspector regardless of the age of the building (e.g. newer buildings are subject to this regulation).

Iowa Specifications

In Iowa, demolition and renovation projects require an asbestos notification that includes an asbestos survey. This survey includes taking samples suspect materials at site, having the samples tested and generating a report based on the findings.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) officials have the authority to shut down a project if asbestos testing has not been completed or if the asbestos survey report is not available on the job site. It is important that all rules and regulations are followed to avoid a project shut down and prevent exposure to those working around asbestos during a renovation or demolition project.
