University of Iowa Wrestling Training Facility

Located in Iowa City, IA

Iowa City is known as “Wrestletown, USA” and with fundraising support the University of Iowa was able to construct the Goschke Family Wrestling Training Center, the new training home of the Iowa men’s and women’s wrestling programs. The 38k square foot building is located on a 3-acre site south of Carver Hawkeye Arena and has an underground tunnel connecting the two facilities.

Shive-Hattery was the civil engineer and landscape architect that led the site design around the facility. Civil engineering scope included site removals, stormwater pollution prevention plan, designing foundations for stone art sculptures that were salvaged and reinstalled on site, underground utilities, stormwater detention, UI ITS and coordination with Mid-Am Gas, sidewalk layout around the facility and front building entrance plaza, landscape architecture, site grading and traffic control.

Carver-Hawkeye Arena athletic events continued during construction so coordinating with Athletics and providing safe pathways for pedestrians with the traffic control design was crucial.
