UI Institutional Roads – Newton Road to Fountain Entrance

The University of Iowa needed to improve the roadway connection from Newton Road to the Fountain Entrance while supporting the movement of vehicles and pedestrians through a busy campus environment. The project required careful planning to integrate new infrastructure with existing campus roads, utilities, and surrounding facilities. Maintaining access and minimizing disruptions were important considerations throughout the design and construction process. The improvements also needed to support the University’s long-term transportation and infrastructure needs.

Shive-Hattery provided a coordinated design approach for the approximately $12.4 million infrastructure project. Civil engineering, landscape architecture, and building systems expertise were brought together to address roadway, site, utility, and related infrastructure needs. The team carefully coordinated improvements with existing campus conditions and connections to surrounding areas. This integrated approach helped the University move the project from planning through construction while addressing the complexities of an active campus.

The improvements provide a more functional connection between Newton Road and the Fountain Entrance while strengthening the University’s broader campus infrastructure. Updated roadway and site elements help support safer and more efficient movement through this area of campus. Coordinated infrastructure improvements also help meet current needs while supporting future campus use.
