Horn Memorial Hospital at Holstein Clinic

Back to projects

Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa, was looking to open a new satellite clinic in Holstein Iowa. A site was chosen off Highway 20 for its high visibility and its nearness to a vibrant part of town. While it was a good location, the site had significant elevation changes that would pose a challenge. Reshaping of the topography of the site was done to ensure the parking area slope would be minimal for patients.

The facility was designed and constructed with shell space so that an additional provider could easily be accommodated. With Holstein’s German and agricultural heritage, the exterior design of the clinic reflects that. Steep, sloped roofs with board and batten walls give it a modern farmhouse appearance. The interior is more contemporary, with high ceilings and lots of glass to let in natural light and provide visibility between the nurses’ station and the front desk. The exam rooms were designed larger than typical, so that they could also function as a treatment room. A lower level provides additional square footage for storage and the mechanical/electrical systems. Special gypsum board between the walls help with soundproofing for additional patient privacy. A bio-retention area was designed for stormwater runoff from the parking lot, with special landscaping and soils used to filter the water before it enters the city’s storm system.

The clinic opened in May of 2021. Including the lower level, the facility is 5,500 square feet and is designed to easily expand in two directions. The project required a multi-disciplinary effort, with civil engineers and landscape architects handling site design in addition to architectural and engineering services for the facility’s design. Horn Memorial Hospital is now able to provide patients in the Holstein area with an easily accessible, modern facility.
